According to Ayurved Today is the Birthdate of the Deity Dhanvantari. Lord Dhanvantari is considered to be the healer of all ailments. On this day Ayurvedic vaidyas (doctors) worship Shri Dhanvantari (vaidya of Deities). Doctors distribute neem leaves and sugar as prasad to visitors. Distribution of specific prasad signifies that Shri Dhanvantari is the Deity who bestows the Divine Principle.Dhanteras is observed for the wellbeing of one’s family members or kin. As per Hindu mythology, Lord Dhanvantari, who is a physician of the godes. 

श्लोक :– सत्यं च येन निरतं रोगं विधूतं, अन्वेषितं च सविधिं आरोग्यमस्य।गूढं निगूढं औषध्यरूपम्, धन्वन्तरिं च सततं प्रणमामि नित्यं ॥

अर्थ:-One who wiped out all the diseases, truly and constantly, One who discovered the guidelines for (good) health, One who uncovered the hidden nature of medicinal plants, I forever, bow to the God Dhanwantari.
