Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay was born in a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family to Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay and Bhagavati Devi at Birsingha village in Hooghly district; later, the village was added to Midnapore district which is in the Ghatal subdivision of Paschim Midnapore district in current day West Bengal on 26 September 1820.

Widely known as Vidhyasagar, he is known to have championed several social causes. He spent is childhood days in abject poverty. His quest for knowledge helped him excel in various fields and win a number of scholarships. Revolutionary by nature, Vidhyasagar ushered in light in the educational system of Bengal.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's biggest achievements can be described as opening school for girls and changing the status and image of women in the orthodox Hindu families of Bengal. 
He also introduces the practice of widow marriage.(1856)A time when women were only oppressed by the society, he took them out of the grip of social evils, and thus, became a champion of social reform.Without which women wouldn’t have progressed as much as they have today. 
Vidyasagar proved to be a true blessing for the women of that era.He will always be remembered as the key figure of women empowerment in history..
